One of the most popular charter destinations in Sicily is the Aeolian Island archipelago. The Aeolian Islands (known as the Eolie in Italian) are: Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Filicudi, and Alicudi. These islands are just north of the Sicilian and Calabria coast, a short sail from Sant'Agata, Portorosa, and Milazzo.
The Aeolian Islands are known for their natural beauty, volcanic activity, and wind. The Greeks believed their wind God "Aeolus" lived in the chain, and the current name "Aeolian" originated from this myth. The island of Stromboli is an active volcano with hourly eruptions, also volcanically active is the islands of Vulcano that has sulfuric mud baths and hot springs. The Aeolian Islands have been an UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000.

The main bases for the Aeolian Islands are Cefalù, Sant'Agata di Militello, Portorosa, Milazzo, Reggio Calabria and Tropea. The main airports are located at Palermo (for those departing from Cefalù), at Catania (for those departing from Sant'Agata, Portorosa, or Milazzo), at Reggio Calabria (for those departing from Reggio Calabria) and at Lamezia (for those departing from Tropea).
