Vulcano sailing tour of the Aeolian Islands
The island of Vulcano is the furthest south of the Aeolian archipelago. Lipari lis just 1 nautical mile to the north. On the Sicilian mainland the closest towns are Portorosa that is 15 nm to the south, Milazzo that is 16 nm to the southeast, and Sant'Agata di Militello that is 25 nm to the southwest:

The Island of Vulcano is the source of the word "volcano" in English. This island has numerous features of secondary volcanism and is an important stop during your boat tour of the Aeolian Islands. It is a green island with clear water and bubbling springs, mud baths, black sand, and health spas. Archeological ruins have not been found on this island, and the classic texts on Vulcano tell stories of a violent and explosive volcano. The last eruption was in 1888. The predominant feature is a cone volcano, Gran Cratere. Volcano has a small, secure port in a protected Bay, also good for anchorage. Within walking distance from the port are restaurants, stores, the trail up the Gran Cratere, mud baths, black sand beaches, and bubbling hot water spring.

To NOT miss: the central solarium, thermal mud baths, hot springs, and the black sand beaches. A tour by boat around the island to visit the beautiful and secluded black sand beach of Gelso on the South shore and the grotto "Cavallo" on the west coast, enter the Bay with the dinghy. The trek up the crater on Vulcano is one of the most spectacular hikes of the Aeolian Islands. The trail is steep and shoes and water are recommended. The most important festival for Vulcano is that of the Angels, which is held on the 2nd of October.
